All About Bamboo Poles
Bamboo is one of the fastest growing trees on this planet and they actually grow at a rate of 1 meter per day! It does not take long to harvest bamboo and is one of the strongest building materials in the world. Its tensile strength per square inch is even more than steel. By-products of bamboo are also very useful as it is a renewable natural resource.
The basic product of the bamboo tree is a bamboo pole.
Bamboo Poles
Bamboo poles are long and they taper naturally. The diameter of a bamboo pole is recorded at its thickest point. Bamboo poles come in different colors, shapes and sizes. Based on this factor, they are categorized into some sub-categories.
Sub-categories of Bamboo poles
1. Tonkin poles – This type of bamboo originates from Southeast China. Their color is the typical bamboo yellow and their texture is very smooth. They are very thin walled and straight. Because of this, Tonkin poles are highly susceptible to chipping and damage. Their diameter ranges from 0.5 to 2 inches and they are almost 12 feet in length.
2. Moso Poles – This variety of bamboo also originates from China. They are shiny brown and olive-green in color. Such a bamboo pole has organic growth patterns on it and the color gradually fades to become sand-yellow. They are very sturdy and offer a lot of strength. They are versatile in nature and have diameters ranging from 2 to 6 inches with lengths going up to 12 feet.
3. Tre Gai Poles – This type of bamboo probably provides the strongest bamboo poles. They are as hard as wood because of which drilling and nailing can be done, without them getting damaged and chipped. They are 2 to 3 inches in diameter. The sanded ones are 8 feet long while the unsanded ones are 12 feet. They are usually yellow in color and can be used for fine woodworking.
4. Black Bamboo Poles – Black Bamboo poles are the best looking among all the others. They are also thin walled like the Tonkin Poles but are stronger than them. They are available in chocolate brown to black colors. Their diameters range from 0.75 to 1.5 inches and lengths go up to 12 feet.
5. Tam Vong Poles – This type of bamboo is quite strong and is used for construction purposes. They are the typical bamboo yellow in color and are available in two sub-types – the Natural Tam Vong and the Sanded Tam Vong. They are around 1.5 inches in diameter are available two sizes – 8 feet and 12 feet ones.
Uses of Bamboo Poles
A bamboo pole is a very good raw material for construction purposes. They are used for flooring, making ply-woods as well as furniture. Nowadays, sofa sets, beds, table lamps, center tables and many other furniture used in house decoration are made from bamboo. The greatest utility of a bamboo pole lies in making houses in earthquake prone areas. They are cheap to build and at the same time, they are very sturdy as well.
Bamboo poles are not very expensive. A standard bamboo pole would cost you around $6 USD. They are in fashion nowadays and they add a touch of class as well. Go ahead, forget wood and try out bamboo. It’s cheaper and equally as good, if not better!
