Introduction To Chemical Free Cleaning

We are living in an age where it is the responsibility of every individual to make some contribution to addressing the negative effects that we, as humans, are having on the overall health of the planet.

Switching To Chemical Free Household Cleaners

One of the easiest ways to do this is to have a look at ways in reducing the enormous amount of household cleaners we use by switching to chemical free cleaning. Stop a minute and think of all the items you have in your home: the chances are you have separate products for cleaning the bathroom, cleaning the kitchen, cleaning the carpets, cleaning the upholstery, disinfectants, antibacterial sprays, stain removers, washing detergents, oven cleaners, degreasers and so on and so on. We are bombarded with demands from manufacturers to ‘try our new and improved’ version of a particular cleaner. There is a bewildering array of products available all making often extravagant claims of amazing results.

It reminds me of a trip to the supermarket a few years ago to buy washing detergent.

Standing in amongst the towering aisles stacked high with a thousand different boxes, cartons, and bottles was a very lost looking old lady. She was gazing around her with her mouth slightly agape and looking fairly close to tears. She looked at me vaguely as I approached and said to me very pitifully “I just want something to wash my undies”.

Negative Effects Of Household Cleaners

Not only is the array bewildering (even to those of us who know what we want to wash our undies with) it is also part of a multi-million dollar industry that, in developing and manufacturing its chemical cleaning products, has had a hugely negative impact on the environment.

Moreover, not only is the manufacture of these cleaning products non-green there are huge concerns regarding the products themselves. Many of the chemicals present in household cleaners are known to cause or trigger various health problems, respiratory diseases like asthma and certain skin conditions included. Even more alarmingly there have been links between household cleaners and some cancers, fertility reduction and detrimental effects on unborn babies.

The way in which household cleaners are used means their toxins may be present in the air that we breathe, the food that we eat and the water that we drink. Don’t you think it’s time to switch to chemical free cleaning?

Harmful Chemicals Present In Household Cleaning Products

Many of the household cleaning products claim to be ‘natural’, ‘eco-friendly’ and ‘green’ but these labels are often misleading.

It is just as well for the manufacturers that there are no proper laws demanding that they declare what is in their household cleaners. It would reveal ingredients alarming enough to prompt many of us to stop using them immediately.

In addition, phosphates that are present in some cleaning products are known to have negatively affected aquatic environments. Harm to these often delicate eco-systems has been caused by the phosphates entering into them by way of drains and run-off.
