Facial Exercises to Reduce Wrinkles

The idea of using facial exercises to avoid wrinkles is far from being a new one. The premise is that all muscles of the body can be toned and firmed by specific exercise and the face is no different. There are over 40 muscles that make up the face. In addition, facial exercises will stimulate efficient circulation and bring more oxygen to the area. Efficient oxygen supply is needed throughout the body to keep it healthy.

As with all exercise, results will not be instant but will be gradual and over a period of weeks or even months.

Facial exercises to avoid wrinkles or reduce the appearance of wrinkles

All of the following exercises must be held for a few seconds and repeated up to 10 times.

Fine lines around mouth – stretch your lips so that they cover your teeth completely, open your mouth slightly and attempt to smile.

Forehead – position a finger of each hand just above your eyes and attempt to raise your eyebrows whilst pulling down your eyes.

Neck – lean you head back slightly by raising your chin. Push your lower lip out and lift it over the top of your upper lift.

Neck and chin – close you mouth and bite your teeth together. Push the tip of your tongue into the back of your lower teeth.

Frown lines – place a finger of each hand just above the eyebrows. Push your eyebrows into your fingers by trying to raise your eyebrows whilst pushing against this with your fingertips.

Cheeks – stretch you neck by pushing your chin onto your chest. Place the fingertips of each hand on your cheek bones and lift the skin and underlying muscle up and over the bones. Hold in this position and open and close your mouth a few times.

There are two very split camps on the benefits of facial exercises. In the pro camp are many people who have tried it and noticed results as well as the many companies and proponents who are wanting to sell you videos, DVDs, books or otherwise make money. In the anti camp are many plastic surgeons and people who have tried it and not noticed results.

It would appear the main argument from plastic surgeons is that all of the muscles of the face are almost constantly in motion from the day we are born and this doesn’t tone them. That argument falls down rather heavily. The same could be said of our arms and legs that are also constantly in use, however without specific muscle training they aren’t necessarily toned. Bear in mind that if facial exercises were proved to be of benefit then plastic surgeons would stand to lose a great deal of their customers.

Transversely, anyone attempting to make money from facial exercise workouts is also going to promote their product in any way they can and testimonials can be manufactured. However, it may be worth noting that some of the leading figures in commercial facial exercise programmes are living adverts for their own products. They do seem to look particularly youthful for their age.

One fact is indisputable – as we get older our skin loses elasticity. Once gone elasticity can’t be replaced so a certain amount of sagging skin will result; no amount of muscle toning will reawaken the elasticity of our skin. It is therefore impossible to counteract all the signs of aging but underlying toned muscles will help.

Facial exercises are free (unless you spend a lot of money on one of the schemes or in-depth regimes already mentioned) and they don’t damage or harm you in any way. Therefore you have nothing to lose by trying them. Perhaps facial exercises do help avoid wrinkles or help to reduce the appearance of those that already exist. Perhaps doing facial exercises to look younger works. The only person who can decide whether it is worth your time and effort is you.
