Fun Things to do on a Rainy Day for Kids and Grownups
Rainy days make many people want to recite “rain rain go away” but rainy days don’t have to feel like forced confinement. Below are some ideas for fun things to do on a rainy day. The ideas are split for kids and grownups, but that doesn’t mean that grownups can’t enjoy the kid ideas and vice versa.
Rainy Day Fun for Kids
Put on a Play
Kids are great at creating stories, so have them create a play to perform for you later. Give them things they can use to make costumes and props. If they say they can’t think of a story, have them act out a favorite book and you have to guess what book they choose.
Build a Fort or Tent in the Living Room
Building a fort out of pillows, sheets and rope in the living room is a very fun activity for many kids. Once they’ve finished building have a storytime and snacks inside the fort. Do be sure to specify how long the fort can stay up otherwise you might find yourself with a fort for several days.
Play Board Games
Games such as junior scatagories, hungry hungry hippos or monopoly junior can be a wonderful way to pass some time on a rainy day. Pick out a few favorites and have fun.
Have a Impromptu Dance Party
Dancing around is great fun and burns up some energy as well. Clear some space in the living room, throw on some tunes and dance. You could incorporate a theme and get all dressed up too.
Bake and Decorate Cookies or Cupcakes
Rainy days are the perfect time to work on those baking skills. Cookies or cupcakes are great to bake, but if you want a more savory option choose bread or quiche. Kids love to help in the kitchen and won’t often fuss about eating things they normally would because they helped make it.
Take a Walk in the Rain
Just because it is raining doesn’t mean you can’t go outside. Grab those rain coats, umbrellas and boots and take an exploration walk around the neighborhood. Look for all the things that are different on rainy days and maybe talk about why they are different (beyond the fact they are wet)
Rainy Day Fun for Grownups
Have an a Home Spa Day
It can be hard to relax when the weather is nice and you know you should be out doing things, which is why rainy days are perfect for a home spa day. Give yourself a hair treatment, pedicure. Take a relaxing bath complete with aromatherapy. Indulge in yourself while to pours outside.
Check out the Local Museum
You know that museum you keep meaning to check out. Make it your rainy day tradition to discover a new museum, gallery or café in your area. That way you not only are broadening your horizons through exposing yourself to new things, but you might also find a new favorite place.
Cook a Gourmet Meal with Friends
Invite your friends over and make gourmet meal to feast on. Choose something none of you have tried before. You’ll have a blast catching up as you cook your meal. Use the good china and decorate the table with candles and pretty name cards for each seat. Then sit back and enjoy the fruits of your labors.
Have a Movie Marathon Day
Pick your favorite actor, actress, or series and have a movie marathon day. Chop up some vegetables to have with hummus, make sweet and salty popcorn, and pour a bit of wine. Be sure to have lots of pillows and blankets handy to keep comfortable throughout the films.
Try Out Different Outfits from Your Closet
We often have tons of things in our closet that we’ve forgotten about or just never know what to wear with. Use the next rainy day to try out different combinations to discover some new outfits you wouldn’t have thought of in a rush.
Do Some Crafts
Crafts are an economical and fun way to decorate your apartment. They can also make great gifts for friends and family around the holiday season. If you are one of these people who start crafting projects but never seem to finish them, then use the rainy day to finally complete a few.
Rainy days are what you make of them. They can feel like a drag, but choose a few fun things to do on a rainy day (maybe make them only a rainy day activity) and you’ll soon find yourself enjoying, or even looking forward to, rainy days.
