5 Healthy Gluten Free Bread-Maker Recipes

Written by: Denice Arthurton

Gluten intolerance appears to be on the rise in humans and even where gluten-free diets are not necessary many people are choosing it as a life style and health promoting option. Gluten free products however can add a great deal to shopping bills, most of them being quite costly alternatives. One way round this is to buy a bread maker and make your own gluten-free foods which can include loaves, rolls, cakes, pizza bases and muffins. Let’s look at some healthy and delicious gluten free bread-machine recipes that are really easy to make.

Your individual bread maker will offer advice for general bread-making tips and settings which will vary from machine to machine.

Gluten Free Bread-Maker Recipes

The following are five healthy bread maker recipes that are gluten free.

1.) Basic Recipe

  • 4 tablespoons of butter or oil
  • 385 ml water
  • 4 tablespoons of skimmed milk powder
  • 3 tablespoons sugar
  • 2 teaspoons salt
  • 250 gram packet of gluten free bread making flour or fibre mix
  • 10 gram sachet of dry yeast

Follow the instructions for your individual bread maker. It will normally require a basic setting for this bread.

2.) Herb Bread

Follow the recipe above and add mixed herbs to taste. Mixed Italian herbs such as oregano, basil and rosemary work well.

3.) Fruit Bread or Sun-dried Tomato Bread

Follow the basic recipe. For fruit bread add half a cup of dried, mixed fruit to the recipe or half a cup of sun-dried tomatoes for the tomato bread.

4.) Gluten Free Muffins

Here’s a healthy gluten free muffins recipe using bread machine:

  • 1 cup or 237 ml of milk
  • 2 eggs – beaten
  • 2 tablespoons of butter
  • 2 tablespoons of sugar
  • 1 teaspoon of salt
  • 3.75 cups of gluten free flour or fibre mix
  • 2 teaspoons of dry yeast

Bake the ingredients above in your bread-maker on a dough setting or your machine’s equivalent. Once done, turn onto a floured surface and knead the dough before rolling out to about 1 cm in thickness. Using a cookie cutter, cut as many muffins as possible from dough and put aside to double in size. Finish by grilling until browned.

5.) Gluten Free Pizza

Here’s how to make gluten free pizza using bread machine:

  • 240 ml water
  • 2 tablespoons of sugar
  • 1 tablespoon of sunflower oil
  • 1 teaspoon of salt
  • 2.75 cups of gluten free flour mix or fibre mix
  • 1 teaspoon of dried yeast
  • Pizza toppings

Place all the ingredients except the toppings in the bread machine and cook on a dough setting or the equivalent on your machine.

Empty the contents from the pan, knead and roll the dough and place on a baking sheet. Leave this until it has doubled in size and then add toppings of your choice. Bake in an oven for twenty minutes at 200 degrees Celsius.

Some recipes will take a little trial and error as all bread machines are slightly different. Many bread machine manufacturers are happy to supply gluten free recipe ideas without charge and sometimes without proof of having purchased one of their products.

Sourcing gluten free bread making flour and fibre mixes is also relatively easy as demand rises. If you are unable to source them locally through health food stores and sometimes pharmacies then there are many on-line ordering options.

Many books are now becoming available too which offer a large choice for gluten free bread maker recipes.
