Health Issues from Work Related Stress

Most adults spend close to 70% of their waking hours at their work place. There is nothing more exhausting and enervating than working in an environment that drains your physical and mental energies. Stress at work can have adverse effects on your health depending on its severity. In this article we will discuss some of the common symptoms of work stress and proceed to enlist the various health issues from work related stress.

Symptoms of Work Place Stress

Job related anxiety – Though it is common for people to feel certain anxiety regarding their work and job performance, it is quite abnormal have anxiety attacks on regular basis. Does thinking about a meeting or client interaction cause you to feel overly anxious? Do you spend most of the hours in your office dreading the next deadline? These are signs of work place anxiety attacks and it’s definitely not normal to have them on regular basis.

Lack of concentration – Do you find it difficult to focus at your job? It could be because you are either not interested in the project you are working on or there is intense pressure due to the deadlines. A continued lack of attention at your work will lead to under productivity which in turn will increase your stress levels. Hostile work environments also adversely affect your ability to concentrate for long.

Nervousness – Feeling steadily nervous in a work environment would suggest a problem with excessive job stress. It is very energy sapping to be in such a nervy condition for most part of the day. This symptom of work stress is more prevalent among the female employees.

Restlessness – If you find yourself continuously restless instead of being relaxed it would indicate that you are very strained and stressed out inside. Excessive mind activity and caffeine can also have this effect.

Addiction to coffee, cigarettes & alcohol – It is quite common to unconsciously imbibe huge quantities of coffee, or smoke away several cigarettes, to beat the work place stress or to feel a stimulation. Depression due to work stress causes many people to opiate themselves with alcohol or, in worse cases, with some drugs.

Moodiness – People tend to get overly temperamental and peevish when they have stress at work. It is quite usual for people to feel a background of unease at their work place; this indirectly causes them to act irritable and moody.

Lack of self esteem – At work, many people determine their worthiness through their job performance. This is of course the wrong attitude to have and it usually results in a severe dent to their self esteem especially when their work is not appreciated or when they are under performing. Low self worthiness in turn results in feelings of depression.
