List of Healthy Breakfast Foods
Breakfast is the most important meal of the day. Your body needs the right nutrition to jump start your day. Eating within the first couple hours of waking up will not only help you feel more alert throughout the day, but it also helps your metabolism work more efficiently. Unfortunately, there are lots of breakfast foods out there that aren’t the best choices for your body and can lead to weight gain and a lethargic feeling throughout the day. Below is a list of some healthy breakfast foods to help you start your day right.
List of Healthy Hot Meals
1.) Oatmeal: Starting your day with a nice, hot bowl of oatmeal will provide your body with fiber, whole grains and key nutrients that your body needs. You can give yourself even more benefit by adding a bit of flax seed, fresh berries, raisins, cinnamon, milk or cooked apples. Kids often enjoy oatmeal with a dollop of peanut butter and a bit of jam. Just try to avoid adding too much sugar.
2.) Eggs: Packed with protein, eggs are a great way to start your day. Hard boiled and poached are two of the healthiest ways to prepare your eggs, but making them scrambled, fried or as an omelet can be healthy too as long as you don’t use too much cheese and oil or butter. Enjoy them on top of some whole wheat toast for a filling healthy meal.
3.) Baked beans: Enjoy a more British style breakfast with some baked beans on toast. Beans is a healthy breakfast food that provides your body with important fiber and protein for a long lasting full feeling. You can have them as a side with your eggs or on top of some crispy whole wheat toast. You can used caned baked beans, but make sure they don’t have a lot of sodium or sugar added.
List of Healthy Cold Breakfast Meals
1.) Muesli: While not as popular as granola, muesli is a very healthy breakfast choice. You can enjoy it with cold or hot milk, yogurt, or the Swiss way where it is soaked overnight in milk. Muesli provides your body with whole grains and fiber. Some come with dried fruits and nuts which add to the nutrition. Add a bit of fresh fruit to the mix for additional flavor.
2.) Fruit Salad with Yogurt: Fresh fruit with a bit of yogurt is a delicious way to start the day. You can enjoy the sweet flavors of the fruits with a plain, natural yogurt. Or you can add a bit of honey for an extra sweetness. Toss a bit of homemade granola on top to complete the filling meal.
3.) Smoked salmon: Smoked salmon adds a little bit of fancy to your breakfast, not to mention all the health benefits. Toss it on top of whole wheat toast or crackers, or eat it plain as a side to your eggs. Other smoked fish work as well if you cannot get smoked salmon, or just want a bit of variety.
Breakfast on the Run
1.) Fruit Peanut Butter Toast: Make your toast a little heartier by topping it with peanut butter and some fruit. Popular fruits include bananas, apples and blueberries. Make it even healthier by sprinkling a bit of ground flax seed over the top. You can also use a whole wheat tortilla instead of bread.
2.) Fruit smoothie: As long as your blender is handy, a fruit smoothie can be a very fast and healthy breakfast option. You can use a variety of fruits, toss in some plain yogurt and low fat milk, maybe even a bit of honey or protein powered and go. Some like to throw a bit of ice in there as well to make it extra cold and more like a slushie.
3.) Dry cereal: When all else fails, pour some low sugar, high fiber cereal into a plastic bag or container and go. You can toss in some berries as well or grab an apple or banana to round out the meal. It isn’t ideal but it at least gets you healthy breakfast foods like fruit, whole grains and fiber to start off your day.
