Can Lemon Water Help You Lose Weight?

There have been many claims about the effectiveness  of a lemon juice diet, where a person takes a squirt of lemon juice in flat warm water every morning to effect weight loss. But are these claims true?

It would seem so in the light of evidence pertaining to the effectiveness of lemons in improving digestion and helping the body regulate the absorption of sugar. That’s not all, Vitamin C also helps the body absorb calcium into fat cells which helps flush fat from these cells.

How Does Lemon Juice Help With Weight Loss?

It’s amazing how a simple fruit like a lemon can be so effective in helping the body regulate its metabolism and sugar absorption, in a manner that helps you lose extra weight.

The secret lies in the citric acid content in a lemon. Let’s look into this in details.

1.) Boosts Metabolism

Lemons are rich in citric acid, so when you take a glass of lemon juice in plain warm water first thing in the morning, you introduce healthy natural digestive aid into your stomach.

The citric acid, from lemons, end up interacting with the other acids and enzymes in your digestive tract which results in a healthy and problem free digestion. Lemon juice also aids bile production in the stomach which is essential for breaking down fats.

For best results, drink lemon or lime juice mixed with mildly warm water (no sugar) around 15 to 25 minutes before you eat breakfast. You can also repeat this for your other meals. Drinking lemon juice after a meal or along with a meal is okay too. Although, the best way to do this is to have it before a meal.

For ever more benefits, add a few drops of ginger juice to the mix.

Tip: Use a straw to drink the juice down or wash your mouth thoroughly after drinking the juice. This will prevent the acidic content from causing damage to your teeth.

2.) Lowers Absorption of Sugars

It has been studied that even a little lemon can help you lower the absorption of sugars from the food you eat simply because of its high acidic content.

You can go one step further and eat some lemon peels along with the juice, this acts like a double whammy on weight gain. This is because the pectin present in the peels helps in weight loss by becoming a gel forming substance in your stomach which reduces the sugar absorption from the food you eat.

3.) High in Vitamin C

A research done at Arizona State University indicated that people with lower Vitamin C levels may be more resistant to fat mass loss.

The study concluded that presence of Vitamin C helps oxidize 30% more fat during a moderate exercise such as walking or jogging as opposed to the lack of it.

This is why people who stock up on foods that are high in vitamin C, such as lemons, oranges, grapes and kiwi fruit, are less likely to gain weight in comparison to people whose intake of Vitamin C is on the lower side.

Drink a glass full of diluted lemon juice in the mornings followed by moderate exercise and you will start seeing results within a couple of weeks!


4.) Helps Absorption of Calcium

It is well proven that lemon juice accentuates the acidity of the digestive system and this helps the body in the absorption of calcium from the foods you eat. This calcium is then stored up in the fat cells.

It has been studied that the more the calcium content in a fat cell, the more its ability to burn fat.

Couple lemon juice with calcium rich foods like sardines, spinach, kale, turnips, oranges, broccoli, sesame seeds, almonds, cheese and watercress, to name a few, to reap maximum benefits.

5.) Increases Your Body’s Alkalinity

Research conducted by University of Alberta indicates that an alkaline diet highly beneficial to the body.

Typically, we tend to eat foods that are high in acidic content. Even beverages like tea and coffee have acidifying effects. To have a healthy body, we need to balance foods that increase acidity with foods that increase alkalinity in the blood stream. This is where foods like lemons come into play.

Lemons help neutralize the acidic content in our blood stream and help the body maintain a healthy PH balance. You will feel more energized and healthy. And this means, you will be motivated to exercise and shed those extra pounds faster!

6.) Helps Reduce Stress Levels

Believe it or not, stress can actually lead to weight gain.

If you find yourself being constantly stressed out then that could be a major reason why you are not able to shed weight effectively.

But fear not, lemons are your friend and they can help reduce your stress levels too.

Studies have found that Vitamin C prevents production of cortisol. Cortisol is a stress hormone that the body releases in response to stress. All these methods are usually tried and tested and its effectiveness is not in doubt. Whether you drink lemon juice with plain warm water or you mix it up with other natural ingredients like honey, it’s effectiveness remains the same.

  1. Ok…..a couple of years ago I was EXTREMELY overweight! I was almost 300 lbs. And im only 5 foot 10inches!
    So I had heard about this supplement called garcenia cambognia. It had claims of mega weight lose.I started taking this for a couple of months and watched the weight melt of of me! After getting down to about 220 I stopped taking it. Somehow the weight continued to flow off of me! After 8 months I was down to an unhealthy 155lbs. And the doctor was actually demanding that I try to PUT WEIGHT BACK ON ME! Now I’ve gotta fill in a VERY IMPORTANT piece of information. For this entire time I was hooked on natural lemon-aid!!!I made my own and it was made extremely strong (I love my lemon juice).I would take a quart bottle of lemon juice and make 2 gallons of lemon-aid power day and that’s what I drank! Well. …after reading this I think I understand how I lost my weight and how my hepatitis hasn’t gotten worse but status the same to better at times!

  3. I found the effectiveness of drinking lemon water about a week ago, so I tried it. I have lost about 4 pounds in just a week! I told my boyfriend about it and he was interested, but he prefers limes. So, I wanted to know, would using limes work just as well?

  4. Hi I have been drinking warm honey with lemon juice water in the morning and lemon water at nite for the past 3 to 4 days. However I have not seen any difference to my weight at all yet 🙁

  5. I truly support the lemon and warm water concoction. It’s also good for your skin. I drink a cup every morning after jogging. It works. Try it.

  6. I have seen several people asking the same thing over and over again; I’m no expert but logic tells me that you should not add salt to your lemon water. Salt retains water and if you are trying to loose weight then retaining water isn’t your best choice now is it? I haven’t started my lemon water “diet” just yet but I plan on starting tomorrow or better yet when I get off work and I am able to make it to the store. I take several vitamins a day also I believe that they help in weight loss. I took them once before (not the lemon water just the vitamins) and lost 20 pounds in a very short period of time (I stopped taking them due to the fact I just got lazy which I don’t plan on that happening again). So once again I am taking my vitamins and adding an extra kick to it this time by drinking my “miracle water” And just for those of you who would like to start taking vitamins also (I AM NOT A DOCTOR!). I take vitamin b-12, vitamin b-6, vitamin e, cinnamon, choline, inositol, and vitamin C.

  8. Everyone should do the lemon diet! I just read this forum 3 weeks ago and decided to give it a shot. I squeezed juice from 2/3 lemons (preferably 3) and I would mix this into water. So I would put this juice into 2 liters of water and drink it throughout the day like how I would normally drink 2 liters but this time with lemon! And also I drank warm lemon water in the morning; simple: warm water from kettle and lemon juice! I slimmed down so much in 3 weeks like my stomach is almost flat! I lost quite a few kgs as well but the main thing is that I lost lots of inches! And also healthy foods help too! Fruits/veggies, lentils etc. I used to get constipated all the time, now not anymore! Also I had 2 cups of green tea with lemon in them everyday. All of this combined has helped me slim down so much in 3 weeks that I am gonna continue until 3 months later, then I will post again!

  9. I have already started on the lemon water diet. I want to lose 10 pounds, cause I just gave birth 3 months ago and 20 pounds are still left. I mainly want to lose the belly fat. I don’t exercise much but try to whenever I can. I fit in sit ups daily.

  10. Firstly I must say I love lemons just with a little salt, now I know it should be without the salt, but I have been told that they are bad for your stomach because they can produce an ulcer. My mate usually goes on many diets like the Atkin south beach and many more, but I really don’t see him losing weight if anything I see him bigger. Do you think that he would be able to lose weight by eating lemons or drinking lemon juice?

  11. Walking alone can be good for certain people but not for everyone. Adding some weight training to your work out routine should help out a lot for those that aren’t seeing any changes. If you have injuries or have health problems you should talk to a Dr and ask them what kind of foods would be best for you or workout routines. Wishing everyone luck!

  12. Here’s what you need to do to lose weight:

    1) find out your BMR (Basal Metabolic Rate)
    2) change your diet to eat less than the BMR
    3) to stop metabolic slow down, do some exercise
    4) Repeat the above until you reach your goal weight.


    PS: if you have no idea how to calculate a BMR just Google it.

  15. I have been eating salads and fruit and multi-grains for a couple months now and haven’t lost any weight. I have been very discouraged. I am 5’4 at 159lbs and I want to weigh 135lbs.   18. I am a 48 year old mother and grandmother. My current weight is about 168 and I’m only 5’5”! I don’t want to be supermodel thin again but I want to be at a healthier weight and still maintain my “curves”. I want to start this lemon juice “diet” hoping that it will help me shed a few pounds. And after reading everyone’s opinions and stories, my best friend and I are very interested in actually trying this out.   21. I have gone through all the comments posted here and most of them are good. I have been trying to lose weight for a long time . I work out 45 minutes a day using treadmill but it’s not giving me any progress. I think i have hit a plateau.   23. I was diagnose with diabetic on the 5 of may. My blood sugar was 19. And fasting blood sugar was 9. A was weighing 103 then I start drinking lemon water first thing in the morning. I lost 18kg in two weeks. I stop eating fat and junk food. Eat lot of green fruit and veggies. My blood sugar is always normal.

I just turned 19 yesterday and for my 19th birthday I had started this “no drink, no lazy, no eating fatty foods” – with this being said, I seem to struggle to find out what I can do to keep off the pounds, and keep losing it. I’m around 75 pounds too heavy for how tall I am. My body built is naturally big (without the fat ) and I’m around 5’4 -5’5. I should be on average about 150 ish! I love lemons but I can’t handle freshly squeezed but I’m highly addicted to the stuff already pre done. I don’t drink it in my water but in my ice-tea! I walk to school every day which is a good 1hr walk! I enjoy walking! However; I seem to be rather lazy after walking for an hr. With all this I have lost 2pounds in 1 month! How do I loose body fat?? I go to school full time Monday – Friday, 10am – 5pm! So gym time is out of the question! I have till July to lose all this weight! I need some help!

  27. I started drinking warm water with lemon juice together with just lemon and I must say it’s been only one week and I can tell you it’s working like magic.   28. Note if you drink straight lemon juice: It can and will damage the enamel of your teeth if not brushed soon after consumption. I learned that the hard way and ended up with 13 small cavities.

  30. Hi, thanks a lot about the advise. Now I have added the confidence. I used lemon water in the past when I was at high school. I had lemon in everything I ate, food, tea, water, you name it and it helped me maintain a weight of 55kgs through out my high school. I left lemon and now I am at 70kgs and not comfortable with it, so I have gone back to taking lemon which I started yesterday and I hope to be 60kgs by end of this month! True I know it works!

  31. Hi there, even I heard lemon is good to loose weight. But my biggest problem is that I am a juvenile diabetic and because of my Lantus insulin which I take in the night is causing me to put on weight. I tried eating just a fruit in the morning but when I just eat an apple and drink milk I am getting low sugar. I can’t eat just fruits for my lunch or breakfast cause I become low very soon and I end up eating chocolate.   38. Hi guys, I use lime and warm water mixed with a little honey. The first time I took, it felt as if my stomach had a work out. My bowel feels a lot better. I am working towards losing 14kg by January. I’ve not checked my weight yet though I’ve been eating healthy for a 2 weeks now. My face is kinda slimming down, which is good cause I’ve got cheeks.   40. Lost 2 kg in 10 days by squeezing the juice of one lemon freshly picked off my tree each morning, filled the glass with water and drank it straight away without stopping. This is the best way physically and psychologically. It you worried about the pips just use your teeth to block them. Sounds silly, I know but it works. Man, I could have saved a lot of money had I known before. Don’t be alarmed if your feel some muscle discomfort during the first week or so. I think it’s the detox. Go for it guys and girls!

  41. I do not have very much weight to lose (I recently put on 5kg and I’m hoping to shift it). My diet is fairly good and I take 4 high impact exercise classes per week but I have seen no change to my weight.   47. Lemon juice in the morning is real time great but haven’t heard anything about grapefruit or grapefruit juice. Drinking a glass of pure grapefruit juice an hour before every meal also helps a lot or having a grapefruit as a snack also helps with weight loss.

  50. I tend to like a drink a bit too much but try to counter it and be nice to my liver by drinking heaps of lemon juice with water and now I love it. Weight loss was an unexpected but welcome result. I’m off the alcohol now but still love my straight lemon juice.

  53. I started drinking lemon water on Sept 1, 2011, from the time I wake up until 11:00 a.m. At 11.00 a.m. I have my lunch (size of a normal dinner). At 7:00 p.m. I have dinner (a size of a snack). As of today, I’ve lost 6 lbs and 2.5 inches (hips and waist). Lemon water works!

  58. Yes, lemon juice helps a lot to reduce weight. Drink a glass of lemon juice in plain lukewarm water and start spot jogging for 20 minutes. You will surely start losing weight in 1 week or so.

  59. I did research on it before really trying it. At First I was like yeah right? Now I crave my lemon water since I started drinking it. I don’t have the desire to drink sodas anymore which I used to love. It does curb your appetite as well. And Yes I have lost weight. 16 pounds so far and still counting! I also started going to the gym. When you first start drinking it, yeah, it has a bitter taste, but soon if you keep drinking it, you will find yourself craving it and more so when you see pounds and inches coming off. All in all even if you are not trying to lose weight the fact is it is good for your body. I love my warm lemon in the morning and I sip on it throughout the day.

  60. I have heard a long time ago how lemon helps burn fats and how the body absorbs warm water better than cold and I am shocked that sugar makes drinking lemon juice pointless.   61. Hey there, I drink lemon juice also and while it’s very good for you, you may want to watch out for the aid hitting your teeth and eroding the enamel. I always drink it with a straw to avoid any major problems.

  62. Hey all, I love to read about the benefits of what I eat or drink. As I coincidentally started my day today by drinking lemon juice on a empty stomach , I decided to read the benefits of it , and found this amazing site with loads of info. Well the only mistake I did was to drink it with sugar. I love lemons, I just didn’t know it helps in weight loss too. I usually take slices of lemon with hot water when I am flying, it really helps when I am on board, because as much as I love to fly, I have motion sickness. It’s been great help for me. I realize I travel with ease and don’t trough up. So those who have the same situation as me, you should ask the steward or stewardess to slice some lemons on a cup of hot water. I usually drink it through out the flight , it works a great deal for me!

  64. I have been drinking lemon water with bicarb soda for the last month and have seen an amazing change in my body. I have also started to add 1/2 tsp of green organic powder too. My body is loving every minute! I make one liter of pure water with a tsp bicarb soda, 1/2 tsp green powder and juice of two lemons and drink this between meals to keep my body super alkaline. Hey guys, whether you add lemon or not drinking water gets rid of excess water and especially warm water in the morning gives you that laxative effect, therefore getting rid of waste and excess water in the body; no bloat, no gloat! Lemon just suppresses your appetite. I know easier said than done, but put your mind to it; drink plenty of water and do some casual exercise. You will love it!

  66. Lemon worked for me in the past. I drank 4-5 glasses for a week while I went to visit family (kept my diet the same) and had noticeable weight loss difference on my return! I drink my lemon water cold and throughout the day but mostly at night!

  68. Great post! I have been drinking lemon juice every morning for the past 3 months. I started out at my all time high of 220lbs at 5’5. I learned of the lemon water from my cousin; I put 4 tsp in warm water and drink it in the morning. I cut back on foods but not all that much. Just tried to structure my diet and stick to a 1200 calorie diet. I am very busy with work but still find 20 minutes a day to take a brisk walk at least 4 times a week. I also drink Cayenne water 3 times a day, that is also natural metabolism booster. Anyhow my story goes that I am down to 165 lbs and didn’t kill myself doing it! Good luck to all!

Today before reading any of this site, I just peeled a lemon tossed it in the blender, blended it up then poured it in my water bottle and filled the water bottle with ice cold water. By time I finished it off the water was room temperature. I liked it much more that chopping the lemon up and squeezing the juice and letting the left over lemon soaking in the water.

  71. Yes, I agree Deenice. I drink my lemon water every morning with cold water and ice – I just prefer it that way. I also add lemon to my water bottle and carry it with me for the day. The best way is to become addicted to lemon; just doing it for the weight lost thing is not going to cut it. You have to love lemon over raw water, and over everything else. Water without lemon to me is like soda without ice. This what I do –

    1) I drink lemon water in the morning.
    2) Put lemon in my daily water.
    3) Eat a fruit only breakfast.
    4) Eat a subway veggie delight sandwich or equivalent for lunch.
    5) Eat whatever the heck I want for dinner, and
    6) Drink lime water before going to bed.

    It’s a lifestyle choice, I’m not a vegetarian but I love my lunch veggie and my dinner whatever. This routine makes me not worry about my weight because my lifestyle is designed to counter weight-gain. I exercise sometimes too. Find a routine for yourself and struggle to keep it, and make it your lifestyle. It’s easy once it becomes a lifestyle. Try it!

  72. Yes, fresh lemon works! It flushes the salt out of your system. My face started slimming when I was told to do this. Cold water works great because your body burns calories as it tries to heat up the water going in. Cold or hot, they both work. Cold maybe better because it works as a thermogenic, because of your body burning calories to warm up the cold water. Thumbs up for lemons!

  79. I started drinking lemon juice several times a day a few weeks back to try to break down some kidney stones in my kidneys.

    I don’t know if it is working, but I have lost 8 pounds, feel better and more energetic. I gave up the soft drinks and coffee. Those who say you don’t feel as hungry are correct. I used to sit down and feel I always wanted seconds at a meal. My portion size is smaller and I rarely have cravings for a seconds. So far so good. I unfortunately just use lemon juice out of the bottle. I just squirt it in a glass about 1/3 full and then fill with water. I like the way I feel!

Fatima, I would suggest not allowing yourself to have only fruit, I love fruit and eat a ton of it but eating only that can cause problems later. if you only eat fruit and then get to the weight you want, and then if you start eating more than just fruit, you will just gain it all right back. Just make little changes, they make a BIG difference.

    I did the lemon water diet with the fruit only breakfast for 1 week and I lost 4-5 pounds, so it does work! Having a high protein diet helps a lot!

I’m not trying to be mean, but how can you expect to learn if you don’t read and/or use your instinct and common sense? Warm or lukewarm water is best. NO salt, NO sugar, NO coffee, etc. Simple: lemon and water. Be consistent and reap the benefits. Natural lemons, Not lazy concentrate. Geez!

  85. Hi Sana, warm water would be better and adding salt may not be the best idea since it can raise your blood pressure. Adding a very small pinch of salt would be fine. During the day we are constantly burning calories anyway, so that helps us to lose the fat. Also acai berries are meant to be helpful for losing weight, so maybe you can try that.

    Sandrine, Fresh lemons are definitely better than concentrates. Warm water is a good idea and adding honey is not bad as long as you don’t add too much of it. I prefer drinking my juice in empty stomach, so before or after jogging does not matter much. Hope this helps.

  96. Yesterday I went running for the first time in a month, and 3 miles slowly was really hard for me. After running, I began drink water with lemon juice and I did for the rest of the day. I ran again this morning, and 4 miles at a much faster pace was actually easy. I feel like I have more energy and I can already tell that I have lost a little weight. I am stunned by the results I have already seen. The extra energy I have is great and I will continue to do this. You can exercise; eat right to reduce overall body fat, and you can do exercises that target thighs, but you cannot specifically get your body to only lose weight in a specific area. Lemon juice in the morning helps with a lot of things primarily because when in the body, a chemical reaction happens where the citric acid components break down to magnesium and potassium, this is the super benefits from lemon juice. Adding sugar counters the effects, and makes the lemon juice useless for the most part. Orange juice isn’t a good substitute because of the high sugar content (doesn’t mean it’s not good for you). The best results come from freshly squeezed lemons and distilled water. Drinking lemon juice helps with sore throats, colds etc and yes, you can drink lemon juice if you have tonsils. What it does inside the body is amazing; helps bind calcium to fat cells so they burn off more quickly, detox the liver and gets the kidneys to flush out those toxins (newbies to lemon water will notice the first few days they’ll pee a lot, but it stops once the initial flushing is done). Lemon water neutralizes lactic acid left over in the muscles after exercise so there’ less pain, the list goes on. Lemons are dirt cheap! Just remember: lukewarm water or room temp is best for our body to absorb, before breakfast is ideal, but throughout the day is good, too; fresh lemons, not concentrated lemon juice bought in a store, and if possible distilled or ionized water is best! I found lemon water a bit bitter at first, but once my body pH adjusted, I was unable to get enough! I would drink in gulps instead of sips. Good luck!

    Mivan – Some excellent juices that can be had in the mornings, on empty stomach, are pomegranate juice, cucumber juice, orange juice, carrot & apple juice. These juices are great for improving digestion, metabolism and providing anti-oxidants that help heal the body. All these juices should be diluted with water and sipped in slowly.

  115. I drink ~6 bottles of water/day with lemon concentrate mixed in. In addition, I take a Biotin vitamin every day which promotes fat metabolism (good for your hair/nails also).   118. Rose, the best way to get used to lemon juice or lemon water is to begin with small or tiny sips; you’re not used to it so expect it to be sour and pucker. But please do keep with it until you’ve drank the entire glass or even 1/2 a glass to begin with.

I think the best way to drink this is to juice the lemon and then add water to fill up the glass. Just make sure to no add sugar. This is a great way to suppress your appetite. I generally start my day drinking lemon water and then going for a long walk. Follow this with a fruit only breakfast. I lost 5 pounds in a week of doing this and I highly recommend this to everyone.
