There is Nothing Out There
If you really understand the truth in the sutra “There is no out there”, then you have the capacity to realize the freedom which is your birth right. The reason why we feel insecure is because we are afraid of the “external” reality of our life. We are afraid of the bills, the boss, the colleagues, the traffic, our health, our finances, our relationship, the government, the terrorists, the list can go on forever. The bottom line is that we are afraid of what is “out” there. We know that we really can’t control what is out there, but we try nevertheless and all we succeed in doing is get frustrated and angry or feel powerless. Some of the famous spiritual teachers have be known to say that – Ignorance is the root of suffering and truth is the foundation for liberation. The truth is that there is no out there, your external reality is just a projection of your inner state of being.
If you want to change your external reality you will need to change your inner reality. Your inner reality basically consists of your thoughts and the emotional response to them. So in simple words – change your thoughts and change your reality. You have complete control over the thoughts that swirl through your mind, after all they are “your” thoughts. No one can force a thought into your mind, you have the choice to accept it or not. You cannot control people or circumstances but you can control your thoughts, and by changing your thoughts you can change your circumstances automatically.
The truth is that the external reality is very “feeble” or temporary. It’s simply a projection of your present state of being, and your present base of belief and thoughts. As you go through you life and change your beliefs and thoughts, you also see your external reality changing in congruence with it. So the external reality is hardly as “nefarious” as people make it out to be, your external circumstances become so powerless when you realize that you are the one who created it in the first place and you have the power to change it in any direction you want.
When you understand that there is no “out” there and that the out is simply a projection of your inner state (your thoughts and emotions), you no longer feel trapped in any external reality. You know that if your income is low it’s simply because you have trained yourself to think thoughts of financial lack, you know that if your relationship is in dire straits it’s because you are thinking negative thoughts about it and if your health is going bad it’s simply because you are holding too many insecure thoughts about your body. Everything that you see as an external manifestation is a result of your inner state of being. So stop trying to change the external and work on changing your inner state, your thoughts and your reactions.
Changing your thought patterns can take a while and it’s not an easy process to begin with. Some of the thoughts that you have been thinking would be chronic in nature, and you will find it difficult to come out of them. For example, you might find it very difficult to replace your “lackful” thoughts with thoughts of abundance. But stick with the practice, and work on controlling your thoughts, don’t give up easily. With practice and time you will find that you actually are in complete control of your thoughts, that you can change a thought as easily as you can move an object. When you acquire such a control over your thoughts, you experience the freedom that life affords. You can create any reality that you desire and enjoy it while understanding that it’s simply a temporary creation or projection of yours. This is true liberation.
