Tips to Recover From Addiction

Addiction can be of different forms, for example – addiction to a chemical like tobacco, addiction to an abusive relationship, addiction to certain negative habits, addiction to certain thoughts and so on. Addiction need not always be negative though, we may have several positive addictions in our life that we are unaware of, like addiction to exercise, addiction to your loving relationship, addiction to a particular sport and so on. When we talk about getting over an addiction, the implication is that it’s negative in nature and is causing you discomfort physically and mentally. So here are a few tips to recover from an addiction with relative ease.

Accept that you have a problem – If you want to recover, you must accept the situation first, and make peace with it. It doesn’t matter how the addiction started, and how much it has impacted your life, but now you have decided to turn a new leaf and that’s what is important. Feel good about your conscious decision to quit on the addiction, appreciate yourself and bask in the knowledge that “it’s never too late”.

Find reasons to stay happy – While you are recovering from an addiction, you might encounter some spells of depression and loneliness. This is simply because your mind is missing the old habit. The best way to overcome this feeling of “emptiness” is to keep yourself occupied in activities that make you feel fulfilled and happy. More importantly, you need to think happy thoughts and focus on staying positive.

Take up some form of physical exercise – It has been studied that people recovering from addiction can benefit immensely by “working out”. You can take up some cardio exercises like jogging, cycling, swimming or walking or you can join your local gym and take up weight training. The idea is to feel pumped up after a rigorous bout of workouts. The body releases “happy chemicals” like endorphins and dopamine, after a strenuous workout, which gives you a feeling of well being and happiness.

Calm your mind – It’s important that you soothe your mind while you are on the path of recovery from an addiction. The mind can get really troublesome and chaotic in some people who are trying quit on a long held habit like smoking. Meditation is a great way to quiet the mind, and release resistance from negative thoughts.

Stay with your decision – Some people, unknowingly, go back to the substance of their addiction with the promise that they will just indulge in it one last time. This can be a big mistake. When you are recovering from an addiction make sure you isolate yourself from the substance that caused it. Keep it away from you at all cost, and stay away from people who might introduce it back to you. Once you decide to quit, stay quit. It gets easy with time.

These are some simple tips to recover from addiction, but the bottom line is that you need to win your battle with your own mind. It’s common for the mind to throw up a lot of negative thoughts, and it might even come up with many excuses to get you to go back to the addiction, but don’t give in to it. Stay strong, stay focused and stay positive – with time it will get easier and easier for you to stop thinking about your addiction and it won’t be long before you are completely free of it.
