How to Get Rid of Bags Under the Eyes
There can be many different causes for bags under the eyes. Most people are familiar with this after a night on the town and lack of sleep. Alcohol consumption and poor sleep are two things that will cause temporary bags under the eyes but there can be many other reasons. Poor diet, allergies and underlying health problems can also be causes for eye bags, under eye fat and eye puffiness and in most cases steps can be taken to help get rid of them.
Aging will also cause bags under the eyes as the skin loses its elasticity and starts to sag. In fact, the skin around the eyes is particularly thin and delicate and will often be the first part of the face to show signs of aging. Certain things can be done in this case to reduce the appearance a little but removal isn’t possible outside of cosmetic surgery.
1.) Ice cubes and iced water – extreme cold will tighten the skin and restrict blood vessels. This helps to reduce puffiness and reduce swelling. To apply this remedy, soak some cotton wool in ice cold water and apply pads to the eyes. Keep them in place for a few minutes until iciness is lost and repeat application.
2.) Cucumber – it was thought until recently that the age old trick of applying cucumber on the eye area to combat puffiness was an old wive’s tale. Many old wive’s tales however have some basis in fact and this may be no different. Cucumber contains Vitamin C and caffeic acid, both of which can help alleviate water retention, soothe irritation and reduce swelling. Apply cucumber slices over the eye area and keep in place for 10 to 20 minutes.
3.) Cold tea bags – another time honored classic but again may actually have some scientific based benefit. Some people recommend iced tea bags which will of course offer the benefits as listed under ‘ice-cubes and iced water’. Additionally tannin, which is present in tea, has anti-inflammatory and astringent properties. Astringents work to constrict and tighten soft tissue such as skin. Red Raspberry tea-bags may be particularly beneficial as they contain extra astringents.
Only use cold tea bags. Place over eye area and leave in place for 10 to 20 minutes.
4.) Raw potato slices – many people swear by this remedy. I have been unable to source any reason why this may work but Vitamin C is present in raw potato so may work in the same way as cucumber.
5.) Drink lots of water – drinking lots of water will help to remove toxins from the body which may be responsible for eye puffiness and bags under the eyes.
There are lots of deriders for natural treatments to get rid of bags under the eyes but as all the treatments listed here are free or of minimal cost and are non-harmful it can’t hurt to try them and you may be pleasantly surprised by the results.
It is always sensible to seek medical advice if you have noticed the sudden onset of bags under the eyes and dark circles. Sinus conditions, allergies and dietary deficiencies, amongst other causes, may be the root of the problem and must be addressed.
Under eye fat can often be a hereditary facial feature and in these cases under eye fat removal is difficult without invasive and expensive surgery. However, under eye fatty deposits can also be due to certain food intolerance and this will give the appearance of under eye bags. Again, seek medical advice as your first port of call.
