How to Walk Off 10 Pounds In 30 Days or Less!
Getting into shape doesn’t have to be as tough as many of us seem to think. If you’ve been struggling with being overweight, you’re probably shaking your head at me in disbelief right now. But, the truth is that small changes in your daily routine really can make a world of difference for your body. If you find yourself sitting most of the day, a simple walk could literally be the first step to getting yourself back into shape.
The Math
In order to lose 10 pounds in a month you need to burn 35,000 calories. That’s 1,166 calories per day. Changing your diet only, as a means to achieve your goal, will be too restrictive and unhealthy. Adding exercise, by walking an hour a day, will allow you to lose 10 pounds in a month or less.
If you are 200 pounds, walking at a speed of 3.0 mph, you will burn 106 calories every mile. So, during a 3 mile walk, you will burn 318 calories. Over the course of the month you will burn 9,450 calories. You will burn more calories depending on your speed and the distance that you cover. Just from walking alone, without any dietary changes, you will burn ¼ of the calories you need to reduce! The rest then can easily be burned through better diet choices. Just decrease you caloric intake by 851 calories per day. So, if you were eating around 2,500 calories per day, shoot for 1,650. By combining exercise and dietary changes, you’ll experience a much more effective and healthier weight loss than you would if you had been relying on dieting alone!
But my schedule is too busy- I don’t have time to walk for an hour a day!
Getting into shape might be the reason you are taking an hour out of your day to walk, but there are so many other benefits to this activity. Walking is a great way to get you out of your office, out of your home and treat yourself to some needed alone time. It actually decreases depression and has the potential to increase self-esteem.
An hour of exercise may seem daunting, but you can break this time up into 20 minute increments. During the time you’re exercising, you can use a listening device to enjoy some music, listen to self-improvement or positive thinking messages, or have a book read to you.
This is the perfect time to give your mind a break before going back to work or re-engaging with your family, which will increase your sense of accomplishment and productivity while decreasing your waistline. This is also the best activity if you are less than enthusiastic about the idea of going to a gym. Walking is a great way to get you moving, and to jump-start your weight loss efforts to benefit your overall physical and mental health.
