Weight Gain During Menopause and How to Combat It
One of the most common symptoms of the menopause is weight gain. It is estimated that as many as 90% of women will experience some increase in weight and for some it will be significant. Weight gain distribution will tend to be around the abdomen even for women who have previously been inclined to gain weight around the thighs and hips.
What causes weight gain during the menopause?
During the menopause women will experience declining and fluctuating levels of hormones in their bodies. These very same hormones have a direct relationship with the body’s metabolic rate, fat storage and levels of appetite.
In addition, decreasing levels of progesterone may cause a tendency to increased water retention. This in itself will not cause weight gain but will make the individual feel bloated and suddenly aware that clothes are a little uncomfortable and tight.
Early menopause weight gain
Weight gain may be one of the first signs that a woman will notice when entering the menopause. It is generally quite slow but also steady. For women who experience the early onset of the menopause or where menopause has been suddenly and surgically induced, normally through hysterectomy, then the weight gain can be much more dramatic and sudden.
Women may feel frustrated by this change in their weight and shape, particularly if they eating exactly as they always have and are leading a healthy and active lifestyle with regular exercise.
Herbs to Combat weight gain during menopause
For most people this will feel like a losing battle. Normal calorie reducing dieting will have no effect whatsoever and if this is drastically undertaken may have the opposite effect and increase weight gain in the long run.
Similarly, increasing exercise levels may also have little or no impact.
There are a few dietary supplements that are thought to aid in the battle against weight gain for menopausal women and include:
Bioperine – a natural pepper extract that may help to increase metabolism.
Gugglesterones – a natural product derived from gugal plant resin and a traditional ayuvedic medicine which also aids metabolism.
Green Tea – this is a metabolism booster and general health booster. Drinking Green Tea will help to maximise weight reduction and maintain it.
Guarana – a natural herbal remedy produced from an evergreen vine. This has been used by the Amazonians for centuries to help combat obesity, amongst other things.
Organic Maca – although some women report results from the above products they don’t fully address the problems of menopausal weight gain. Because it is mainly the hormonal imbalance that is causing the weight gain, it is often more effective to address the issue by aiding the body to level this out.
One product that has been hailed as a little miracle cure for nearly all the menopausal symptoms is Organic Maca. This plant, a member of the turnip family, has the unique ability to stimulate the body to produce and regulate its own hormone levels, 100% naturally and without side effects.
Weight gain during menopause is almost inevitable and the battle against it can be very frustrating. Continue to exercise as much as you can, maintain a healthy diet that avoids sugars, alcohol, tobacco and caffeine and consider one of the above recommendations to aid you in your endeavors.
